Tanuki Project out of Montreal, BC isn't your average everyday electronic act. They are a modern take on old school trip-hop and if that isn't the breath of air 2021 needs, I don't know what the hell is.
They've been at it since 2009 or so, and this is their third or fourth release depending on who you ask. The latest EP has a long weird title (Adamant _ CHAPTER#01) and I hope that translates to the music. I need something weird in my life right now.
The one-sheet I'm reading recommends headphones so I'm gonna listen that way. I'm good at taking directions. You can check out the video for "Slow" below and just under it, I'm gonna tell you all about what I think of it.
Watch the music video for "'Slow" below:
The record starts with "Dystopia" and it's a mix of Bjork, Portishead, and Tricky vibes. The beat is solid and the vocals are a soft underbelly of haunting lyrical content that would have you feeling hopeless if it didn't feel so good to listen to. Solid starter here. "Slow" is next and I'm a fan of it. Less dark, but still has haunting energy to it. I think this was a good choice for the single as it is easier to hum along to than the opener. "Stone" is a weak spot for me. This one would have been better off being called "Slow" because it's quite the slog. I'd recommend a skip on this one. The EP ends on "Hope" and it's strong, although I like the first two tracks more. It is a recovery from the prior track. Overall, I really like this and could see myself going back for a listen or two.
