First things first, I had never heard of Michael P Cullen and the Soul Searchers. I dug in and found out that he’s from Sydney, Australia, often wears a suit, and has an EP called “Live at Lazybones” coming out soon. So while I’m not listening to the EP as it’s not available at this time, I am able to sample and review the first single titled, Believer as a taster.
Watch the music video for "Believer" below:
It starts with a drumstick countdown and an “Oh Yeah!” so we’re obviously about to rock. My initial reaction is that it reminds me of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds which isn’t a bad thing. He’s got a great baritone delivery that’s like a mix of Scott Walker and Tom Waits. The guitars are pretty jangly. It’s kind of like a dark REM. There’s a really breathy bridge in the middle of a pretty straightforward verse, chorus, verse that I dig a lot. Really solid tune with an excellent live performance. I’m really looking forward to hearing the rest of the EP.
Michael P Cullen is going to hit all the right notes for the moody music lover. Watch the video and then wait for the EP to come out. Something tells me it’s going to be worth it.
